What makes cow sacred ?

Goddess Aditi , the creator of the creatures is associated with and identified as a cow.

It is believed that the whole universe was inside the womb of goddess Aditi, before the creation. So, she is known as the creator of heavenly bodies as well as the mother of all 33 Koti (types) of Gods of Hinduism. She is the personification of the sky, space, and the whole universe, where all gods and creatures reside. Rigveda referred Cow as Devi (Goddess), and identified Cow with Aditi (Mother of Gods). That is why Cow is regarded as Mother of all Gods in India. Killing a Cow was considered as sinful as killing a Brahman. It is widely known that Cow is regarded as Mother of all Gods in India. Goddess Aditi mostly represents the appearance of a Cow. As she provides nourishment and as the cosmic cow, her milk is identified with the redemptive, invigorating drink Soma.

Lord Krishna is closely associated with Cows. When he was very small, he was called as Gopala which means Protector of Cows. He was a cowherd boy.
Cow is also associated with Lord Shiva, his vehicle is Nandi ( Cow ),and Indra ( Kamdhenu ).

Aditi (Sanskrit: अदिति, lit. ‘boundless’ or ‘limitless’[a] or ‘innocence’[1]) is a daughter of Daksha and Asikni . Aditi is a Vedic goddess in Hinduism, the personification of the infinite. She is the goddess of the earth, sky, unconsciousness, the past, the future and fertility.[3] She is the mother of the celestial deities the Adityas, and is referred to as the mother of many gods. As celestial mother of every existing form and being, the synthesis of all things, she is associated with space (akasa) and with mystic speech.
She is primaeval mentioned in the Rigveda.  In the Rig Veda, she is described as Devamatri or the mother of the Gods. Aditi is independent and unrestrained like the infinite span of the sky.

Like many other Hindu gods and goddesses, Aditi too has a Vaahan (Vehicle), which is a rooster. It is believed that the rooster symbolizes strength and honor. Her weapons include Trisul and a Sword. It is also believed that the goddess Aditi used to kill the demons with her weapons and safeguards her worshippers against various difficulties.
